BIRTH OF P-POP

Pinoy or Philippine Pop groups have not been successful in the Philippines. Pop artists that were popular in the 1970’s were artists like Pilita Corrales, Ryan Cayabyab, Basil Váldez, Rey Valera, José Mari Chan and APO Hiking Society.

International pop groups were also introduced in the 1990’s such as N’sync, Spice Girls, Westlife, A1, and Backstreet Boys. Then the Philippines was hit by hallyu (Korean wave) when Korean dramas were aired in GMA Pinoy TV. Then the song "Nobody" was popularized all over the Philippines along with Sandara Park, a former artist in the Philippines debuted in the girl group 2NE1. Many Korean artists are now very popular in the Philippines such as Super Junior, DBSK (Dong Bang Shi Ki), Shinee, U-Kiss, Girls Generation, Wondergirls, and 2NE1. Many Pinoy boy groups have tried to make it in the Philippine Entertainment Industry but many have failed due to the lack of support.

Since then, not many attempted until the Birth of P-pop also known as “ppopdomination” hit the Philippines.

The first P-pop group to become popular was the group La Diva.

The group consists of three females with amazing vocal powers. They are most famous for their blended version of famous songs.

Then a five member girl group POP GIRLS arrived and dominated the music industry with their fabulous vocal and dancing talent.

They are known for their cute and bubbly personalities.

Their debut album Echoes consist of catchy, cute, and up-beat songs.

If you want to know the definition of sexy then Eurasia can surely demonstrate that with five sexy Eurasian girls.

They are known for their song “Working Girls” which was also the theme song of a blockbuster movie in the Philippines. Since then they have truly proved that they deserve a spot in the entertainment industry with their seductive choreography and catchy songs.

The only boy band in the Philippines that truly dominated the music industry is XLR8.

With eight handsome and talented members they have surely captured the hearts of many fan girls. They have excelled in the music charts with their debut song “You’re So Hot.” Since then, they have performed songs from their album such as I Love You Girl, Dance with Me and For You in the Asia’s Party Capital, Party Pilipinas.

We will be looking forward to other P-pop groups to prove themselves and obtain their spot in the industry. The groups to look forward to are the 100 Percent, a ballad group consisting of four members, and the rebirth of the sexy girl group Mocha Girls with a new concept and hot sizzling members.

What makes P-pop special? P-pop represents the talents and abilities of our very own Filipino artists. P-pop represents a challenge for the Philippine Music Industry. P-pop represents a change, a change that one day we can value our own artists and show the world that we deserve to be recognized. P-pop represents a dream for those who want to listen to original songs composed by Filipinos. A dream that in the future when we watch Party Pilipinas and ASAP we can listen to songs created and performed by Filipinos, and a hope that we no longer have to listen to “our” version of other countries’ songs. P-pop is something all Filipinos should love and value because P-pop is our Own.
